– This paper has attempted to present a possible method by which large organizations, such as the United Kingdom government, might test the software supplied by computer manufacturers to its installations. Its main aim may be described as an attempt to ensure that new computer installations can rapidly take on the work for which they were purchased by ensuring that installations have the best available information on which to plan their work. It is a procedure aimed at elucidating the facts about software; what works and what does not and how well does it work?

– The rapid expansion of output in the United States and the United Kingdom during the world wars especially the dramatic U.S. growth during World War II has been widely perceived by economists as natural experiments demonstrating the effectiveness of expansionary demand policy. (Vernon 1994, Braun and McGrattan 1993, Romer 1992, Blinder 1989, DeLong and Summers 1988, Barro 1986a, Barro 1981, Friedman and Schwarz 1963, Friedman 1952) But were the U.S. and U.K. experiences typical of war economies?
